Archaeology, History, Conservation and Restoration of Archaeological Sites
The Kuang Luang Wiang Kaew Development Project is a Chiang Mai province initiative aiming to transform the site of the old Chiang Mai Women's Prison, located on Rajvithi Road, Sri Phum Subdistrict, Muang District, Chiang Mai, into a shared public space. This transformation is intended to resonate with the historical and archaeological significance of the site, maximizing community benefits. The Chiang Mai Provincial Office has thus enhanced the participation for all sectors in determining the future use of this area.
The project's appeal lies not only in the archaeological discoveries but also in the development of a site with layered historical value. Throughout the project's journey, numerous questions arise regarding what deserves preservation. Some stories might reveal new dimensions worth acknowledging and remembering. The process of conserving and developing this site involves diverse conceptual approaches, negotiations, and compromises among all participating sectors. The ultimate challenge for everyone involved is how to develop the area in a way that allows people to benefit from it in their contemporary lives while preserving its rich historical and archaeological essence.
