During his childhood days, Joshua spent almost every school holiday going back to his village and spending weeks with his grandfather where his indigenous culture and knowledge are shared between an elder to the next generation. His interest in advocacy stems from being empowered by a local indigenous roundtable discussion which prompted him to start highlighting the importance of indigenous culture and how they should have a bigger voice at the decision-making level. In YSEALI, he was exposed to the concept of faith and environment by Sofiah Jamil and subsequently taken as a teaching fellow to run a workshop on the importance of faith and environment and organised the Rhyme for Nature: Faith and Environment Poetry and Songwriting competition. Through this influence, the concept of faith and culture was adopted in a preamble of ASEAN You Can Dialogue’s Bandar Seri Begawan Declaration.
