Architecture, Heritage Conservation and Preservation

Conservation aims to make use of heritage places whilst retaining their authenticity and cultural values. However, these both are critical and need to be carefully interpreted. Authenticity is not only a matter of physical materiality but also has to do with identifying cultural values which sustain the memory of the past.

Taking the Majapahit Houses Program (MHP) in Majapahit heritage site in Trowulan, East Java as a case study, this talk will show how these notions of authenticity and cultural values have come into conflict with present-day conservation practices. A common policy is needed to find a way to achieve flexibility in the development of balance in heritage conservation.
