Observing and understanding local culture and practices is an important first step towards building sustainably. As a native of Shan State who studied abroad, Zaw revisited his roots and explored the potential of experimenting sustainable practices in his work. From sourcing materials to hiring builders and craftsmen, from engaging the past through culture to managing the present through participatory decision-making, the process of practicing architecture was based on the desire for cultural and economic development as much as it was based on preserving the local environment. The project is a stepping stone for better practices in hospitality development in Inle.
