On May 6th, 1840, the first postage stamp—the One Penny Black—appeared in Britain. Soon stamps made their way throughout Europe and the globe as a whole, in turn completely revolutionizing the system through which mail was paid for. However, it wouldn’t be until August 4th, 1883 that Thailand issued stamps of its own. Since their introduction, various special events and production errors created Thai stamps that are now rare collector’s items, although collecting such postage has not been historically popular. This article details the history and current value of stamps in Thailand since their appearance in 1883 and outlines resources for those intrigued by Thai stamps to further pursue their interests.
