The majority of historical sources concur that King Mang Rai founded Chiang Rai between March 1262 AD and March 1263 AD, with scholars calculating the exact date to be Friday 26 January 1263 AD. This article provides a comprehensive history of Chiang Rai since that date, as well as a detailed understanding of its founder and successive rulers. Research was conducted through a combination of sources, including oral tradition in the region, the personal accounts of European visitors and general historical documentation. The article also aims to catalog the religious iconography of Chiang Rai and the Buddhist images commissioned by its rulers. Additionally, there is a specific focus on the history and reconstruction of the city wall, as well as the modern construction of the city navel pillar, a traditional model of the universe.
