Amulets and charms have historically been used by a wide range of peoples and cultures across the world as magical protection against danger. Today they can still be found among every nation and faith in modern times; Thailand is no exception. Known as Khawng klang (ของขลัง), or “sacred, potent objects,” these spiritual objects have long played a significant role in Thai culture. This article aims to identify and explain the various categories of Thai charms and amulets and follows the traditional division of four major classes, each with their own subclasses. Additionally, the article contextualizes each category in terms of their etymology and possible historical origin. Also discussed are the differing materials and procedure required for each amulet, along with the typical user and intended applications.
