The Image of the Burmese Enemy in Thai Perceptions and Historical Writings


This article argues that the particular sociopolitical conditions of each period may lead to a particular understanding, interpretation and reshaping of the past concerning the relationship between Thailand and Burma.

Before the kingdom of Ayudhya fell to the Burmese armies in 1767, Ayudhya chroniclers did not seriously consider wars conducted against the Burmese as being more important than other historical events and the stories concerning the Siamese-Burmese wars were additions to the chronicles of Ayudhya and were in fact, composed in the early Bangkok period to legitimise the rulers' political power.
