“Heritage Making”: Urban Heritage and Historical Districts in Melaka and Penang

Melaka and George Town were both declared as World Heritage areas in 2008. Past attempts to submit nomination proposals to UNESCO for the properties in Melaka and Penang have often been attention grabbing. Further, as many parties were involved in the often complex area of defining heritage and conservation this has led to further complexity. The article is a literature review of the process of having heritage sites listed as World Heritage areas in Melaka and Penang. The paper reveals that heritage exists as a need of contemporary societies rather than as a legacy of former generations.
