Rafflesia kerrii Meijer, Thailand's largest flower, is described from buds examined at Khao Sok National Park, Surat Thani Province, southern Thailand, in greater detail than previously reported. Current knowledge of the distribution, status and ecology of the species is reviewed. Threats to the survival of R. kerrii include habitat destruction and overcollection by local villagers for medicinal purposes and other reasons. R. kerrii's status is vulnerable, according to IUCN Red Data Book criteria. We suggest that R. kerrii should be promoted as a tourist attraction, in conjunction with a well planned education program, to provide an economic incentive for local people to protect the species. We also suggest that the government enact legislation to protect Thailand's botanical treasures, including R. kerril, from commercial exploitation.
