In correlation with The Siam Society 120th Anniversary special performance, \u201c1907: Rama V\u2019s European Operatic Journey\u201d, an operatic variety show adaptation of King Chulalongkorn\u2019s visit to Europe in 1907, the latest edition of The Siam Society Literary Lounge titled \u201cIn Search for Cio Cio San: King Rama V\u2019s Opera Visits of 1907\u201d is scheduled to be held on Saturday, 5 October 2024 at 14:00 – 16:00.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Siam Society cultural officer, Dr Peerapat Ouysook, and stage director, Tarin Prinyaknit will lead a discussion of King Chulalongkorn\u2019s travel memoir to Europe in 1907, known in Thai as \u201c\u0e1e\u0e23\u0e30\u0e23\u0e32\u0e0a\u0e19\u0e34\u0e1e\u0e19\u0e18\u0e4c\u0e44\u0e01\u0e25\u0e1a\u0e49\u0e32\u0e19\u201d (Far From Home).<\/p>\n

Join them as they uncover details concerning King Chulalongkorn\u2019s visits to the opera houses in Italy, France, and The UK, where he attended lavish operatic performances led by the famous artists of the Belle Epoque, including Mme Marguerite Carr\u00e9, Mme Marthe Chenal, and Mme Eugenia Burzio.<\/p>\n

Participants can expect to see the costume and set designs of the operas attended by King Chulalongkorn, as well as the vocal recordings of some singers he heard and saw. All of which are now accessible via public archives in Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n
