\u201cWhat is Bangkok like?\u201d asked an American visitor rhetorically around the turn of the last century. Some sought to answer the question by evoking its \u201coriental\u201d atmosphere or by relying on clich\u00e9s like \u201cVenice of the East\u201d. Others insisted its contrasts and contradictions made an easy description impossible. Bangkok in the early decades of the 20th century was indeed a city in transition, mixing (as it did) east with west and tradition with modernity.<\/p>\n
In Bangkok<\/em>, published by River Books in autumn\/fall 2024, <\/em>is a collection of texts and images which reflect the foreign experience of Siam\u2019s capital at a time of often unsettling change, the foreigners in question being both long-term residents and short-term visitors.<\/p>\n In this illustrated talk, Graham Jefcoate (the editor) will introduce the book. He will discuss the choice of topics and texts and some of the issues they raise. though he spent much of his working life abroad. He is now retired and lives mostly in Chiang Mai. He took an increasing interest in Thailand when he became Head of Early Printed Collections at the British Library in London in 1997, and served as a member of the committee of the Anglo-Thai Society. In recent years, he has become interested in the life of foreign communities in early 20th century Siam\/Thailand.
