The decline of the Ban Phlu Luang Dynasty leading to Ayutthaya\u2019s catastrophic defeat in 1767, followed by Siam\u2019s resurgence under King Taksin at Thonburi and then its transformation with the Chakri Dynasty\u2019s relocation to Bangkok in 1782, are well known to every citizen and resident of Thailand. But is the course of those events fully and correctly understood? In his dissident Chronicle and Testament, the court scribe Diogo d\u2019Almeida (1745-1808) sought to fill in many of the missing details and revise others to correct the redacted record. The recent discovery and translation of Diogo\u2019s apocryphal manuscripts form the subject of this talk. In his struggle to right the expurgated record, Diogo produced a revisionist history of the time. But who was Diogo, and what were his motives? In what ways did his writings deviate from the conventional record? Can his stirring words be trusted? Those issues are touched on in this introduction to Diogo\u2019s Chronicle.<\/p>\n

Edward Van Roy<\/strong> has lived in Thailand since 1963. From that time to 1997 he authored many studies on Asian, Southeast Asian, and Thai economic and social issues. Since 1997 he has focused his interests on Thai ethnic studies, historical anthropology, and Bangkok history, which have led to a dozen articles as well as two books: Sampheng: Bangkok\u2019s Chinatown Inside Out<\/em> (Institute of Asian Studies, Chulalongkorn University, 2007 and 2016); and Siamese Melting Pot: Ethnic Groups in the Making of Bangkok<\/em> (Institute for Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore, and Silkworm Books, 2017, Thai translation by Matichon Books, 2022). He is currently researching the history of Bangkok\u2019s Khlong San District.<\/p>\n
