Over the past forty years, books on Tibetan living and dying have been translated into many languages, spreading across the world\u2014including here in Thailand. Through them, the Tibetan Buddhist view of death, especially as expressed in the Dzogchen path, has opened new ways of understanding life, the intermediate state, and what lies beyond. In this talk, we will turn to Kunsang Nyingtig, the Heart Drops of Samantabhadra<\/em>, a Dzogchen text revered as one of the most profound pith instructions in the tradition. It was composed by Shardza Tashi Gyaltsen Rinpoche, the great Bon Buddhist Dzogchen master of Eastern Tibet, who attained the rainbow body in 1934. In this text, four core teachings are presented. The fourth, on bardo and phowa, offers a powerful method for liberation for those who have not yet realized the nature of mind during life. What makes this teaching so significant is its vision of the bardo<\/em>\u2014not as a frightening, illusory or unfamiliar state, but as a return to what has always been: timeless awareness, the heart drop of Samantabhadra (Kuntu Zangpo), the Primordial Buddha, ever present in the minds of all sentient beings and untouched by the stains of samsara. In this light, death is not an end, but a doorway to the discovery of spontaneous presence of enlightened states within us. This realization becomes possible when the dying person is able to integrate their awareness with the vast expanse of space \u2014 like a child returning to the embrace of the mother. The essence of this unification is clearly explained in the text, which we will explore. In addition, we will reflect on contemporary issues through the lens of the text\u2019s insights and consider how the profound instructions on bardo and phowa can guide us across the threshold with mindfulness, clarity, and peace.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_blurb title=”About the speaker” icon_placement=”left” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ header_level=”h3″ header_font=”||||||||” custom_padding=”||10px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n Dr. Kalsang Dawa<\/strong> (Krisadawan Metavikul)<\/strong> is a teacher of Tibetan Buddhism and a scholar of Tibetan studies. Formerly an associate professor at the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, she is the president of the Thousand Stars Foundation, founder of Kundrol Dechen Ling (Khadiravana Retreat Center) in Hua Hin, as well as the Dechen Institute and Dakini Meditation Center in Bangkok. Dr. Kalsang Dawa completed advanced meditation training under the lineage of Shardza Tashi Gyaltsen Rinpoche at Zhang Zhung Dzogchen Lobling College, Tokden Monastery, Amdo, Tibet. The teachings she received are part of the ancient and profound Yungdrung Bon tradition. In addition, she has studied with respected masters from other Tibetan lineages, which form her non-sectarian perspective. During 2005-2020, she has undertaken numerous intensive retreats, including a 100-day tummo retreat and a 49-day dark retreat based on Dzogchen instructions. She is recognized as the first woman to complete this century-old meditation curriculum as preserved at Tokden. In Thailand, Dr. Kalsang Dawa has laid the foundation for Tibetan Buddhist education and practice, and is now developing an international advanced meditation program.
