Festivals of South East Asia<\/em> offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary exploration of ritual practices, seasonal celebrations, and cultural performances across six countries \u2014\u00a0Thailand, Indonesia, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. Drawing from primary fieldwork, historical sources, and oral traditions, this volume documents nearly\u00a050 major and lesser-known festivals, presenting them through the lenses of\u00a0anthropology, religious studies, art history, and cultural heritage studies.<\/p>\n

Structured both thematically and regionally, the book delves into the\u00a0symbolic, spiritual, and socio-cultural\u00a0dimensions\u00a0of each festival. It highlights how these events serve not only as expressions of local belief systems but also as platforms for community identity, memory preservation, and cross-cultural continuity. Special attention is given to the\u00a0shared Indic heritage, indigenous belief systems, and evolving ritual ecologies shaped by migration, modernity, and state narratives.<\/p>\n

Enhanced by over\u00a0150 archival and contemporary images, the work contributes to the broader discourse on\u00a0intangible cultural heritage, providing valuable insight into Southeast Asia\u2019s living traditions. Anita Bose<\/strong>, born in Kolkata in 1971, is an Indian author, artist, and independent researcher specializing in Indian and Southeast Asian cultural heritage. She holds a Master\u2019s degree in Bengali Literature, Indian Art, Indology, and Textile Design, and is the only Indian guide certified by the Bangkok National Museum.<\/p>\n

Her acclaimed book\u00a0Patachitra of Odisha<\/em>, Ramayana Footprints in South-East Asian Culture and Heritage<\/em>, Saptapadi<\/em>, and the new one Festivals of Southeast Asia<\/em> (2018, 2019, 2021, 2025), and numerous articles reflect over a decade of research into India\u2019s cultural influence on Southeast Asia. A practicing artist and educator, associated with Chulalongkorn University Asian studies, Shikipakorn University, IGNCA, IKS, and many more. She promotes traditional art globally through exhibitions, workshops, and social work, especially for underprivileged communities in India and Thailand. Guided by the Upanishadic mantra \u201cCharivati\u201d, she continues her journey of cultural storytelling across borders.<\/p>\n
