The horse is the 7th animal in the traditional Chinese New Year cycle, as well as being one of the members of the group known as \u201cThe Six Domestic Animals.\u201d \u00a0But as you\u2019ll learn in our CNY annual talk, a horse is not only regarded as \u201cthe dragon of the shed,\u201d but in Chinese art, a horse is not even necessarily a horse. \u00a0Join us for a historical overview of the history of the horse in Chinese archaeology, history, mythology and art, beginning with the earliest carving of horses in East Asia, only recently found at the late Neolithic site of Sh\u00edmao.<\/p>\n

Patricia Bjaaland Welch<\/strong>\u00a0is a former University lecturer in Chinese religion, philosophy and art, and has been a docent for over two decades in prominent Asian art museums in Boston, Bangkok and Singapore. Despite once leaving academia for the private business world to head up regional and global marketing teams for such companies as American Express, Time Magazine Group, ABN AMRO Bank and the consulting firm McKinsey & Company, she remained passionate about Asian art and continued studying, collecting and writing on the subject. Today, she has returned full-time to the field, and is a frequent author and speaker on subjects relating to Chinese art and history. She is the author of five published books and dozens of articles, including a book on Chinese New Year traditions for Oxford University Press, and\u00a0Chinese Art: A Guide to Motifs and Visual Imagery<\/em>\u00a0with Tuttle.
