This talk discusses three interconnected Thai meditation systems that incorporate the attainments and visions of multiple inner bodies\u2014spiritual bodies to be seen within the practitioner\u2019s mind.\u00a0 The first system, Matchima Baeb Lamdap, was transmitted from Supreme Patriarch Suk Kai Thuean (1733-1822)\u00a0of Wat Ratchasittharam in Bangkok, who was the fifth Sa\u1e45ghar\u0101ja of the Bangkok era. The second, Samm\u0101 Araha\u1e43 (also known as Vijj\u0101 Dhammak\u0101ya), was developed in 1916 by Luang Pho Sot Candasaro (1884-1959), the influential abbot of Wat Paknam, Bangkok. The third system, Manomayiddhi (Power of Mind), was founded in 1959 by Luang Pho Ruesi Lingdam (Black Monkey Sage) (1916-1992), the abbot of Wat Tha Sung in Uthai Thani. Although each system conceives of the inner bodies differently, all agree that they are projections of the meditator\u2019s citta<\/em>, which is seen as a luminous sphere either above the navel or at the heart base (hadaya-vatthu<\/em>), and\u00a0are the natural culmination of increasingly refined levels of concentration (sam\u0101dhi<\/em>)\u00a0and attainments of the paths (magga<\/em>) and fruits (phala<\/em>) of the noble ones (ariya<\/em>).<\/p>\n The talk will also introduce the author\u2019s latest book, Seeing the Bodies Within<\/em> (Shambhala, Boulder CO), which explores Samm\u0101 Araha\u1e43 meditation and discusses the network of meditation monks from Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Suphanburi, and other parts of central Thailand, who influenced the development of the three systems.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_blurb title=”About the speaker” icon_placement=”left” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ header_level=”h3″ header_font=”||||||||” custom_padding=”||10px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n Potprecha Cholvijarn<\/strong> (PhD) is a lecturer at the Thai Studies Center, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University.
