Despite their significant contributions to the Thai economy, Tai Yai migrants continue to experience structural marginalization and exclusion from mainstream Thai society. While studies on the Tai Yai in Chiang Mai and in the Northern Thai borderlands exist, we know little about the livelihood strategies of the new wave of Tai Yai migrant community in urban Bangkok. Focusing on the relationship between Buddhist monks and young Tai Yai migrants at Wat Mai, we have used ethnographic methodology to investigate livelihood and learning strategies of young Tai Yai migrants originating from Shan State, Myanmar, whose migration to Bangkok has intensified over recent decades. We like to present our findings to an interested audience.<\/p>\n

Alexander Horstmann <\/strong>is Associate Professor of Anthropology at MAIDS-GRID, Chulalongkorn University. He is also an art director in applied theatre, with a particular focus on Biographical Theatre, Improvisation, Popular Theatre, Forum Theatre, and Rainbow of Desire. He teaches at Chulalongkorn University together with Ajarn Sonny of Malongdu Theatre. Previously, he was Visiting Professor in Erlangen at FAU, EHESS in Paris, Cornell, Copenhagen, and Tallinn. His research and publications focus on migration, displacement, borderlands, and refugee activism, and have appeared in journals including Zeitschrift f\u00fcr Ethnologie<\/em>, Journal of Refugee Studies<\/em>, SOJOURN<\/em>, Journal of Southeast Asian Studies<\/em>, Religions<\/em>, and Anthropos<\/em>, among many others. His books include Building Noah\u2019s Ark for Migrants, Refugees and Religious Communities<\/em>, published by Palgrave Macmillan and edited with Jin-Heon Jung.<\/p>\n Suratsawadee Panphet<\/strong> graduated in Development Studies from Thammasat University. She believes that access to quality education is an important mechanism for social mobility and human development. She currently works as an analyst at the Office of Strategy, King Mongkut\u2019s University of Technology Thonburi. Her professional experience includes work in education as a teacher at an alternative school, as well as serving as an analyst for Thailand\u2019s poverty alleviation research funding. She also has experience in field-based research with ethnic communities in Northern Thailand.
