With support from the International National Trust Organisation (INTO)<\/em><\/p>\n In the centre of a city like Kuala Lumpur, most people look up at the dramatic skyline dominated by sleek, modern skyscrapers and buildings on a monumental scale. Urban dwellers are used to the sounds of traffic and sirens and the feel of heat bouncing off concrete and reflecting off glass. Over the last two and a half years, Badan Warisan Malaysia has been working on two interlocking projects to create an urban oasis of greenery and calm amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, where visitors can connect with the past and consider how we can live better for the future.<\/p>\n This talk will explore the partnership between heritage and sustainability and highlight the successes and challenges of these two projects: restoring the traditional, timber Malay house, Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman, and revitalising the Heritage Kampung Garden in the City which surrounds it.<\/p>\n Badan Warisan Malaysia has been a leading voice in heritage preservation in Malaysia for over 40 years, working from our heritage centre in a colonial bungalow in the heart of KL.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_blurb title=”About the speaker” icon_placement=”left” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ header_level=”h3″ header_font=”||||||||” custom_padding=”||10px||false|false” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n Katy Karpfinger <\/strong>is the Head of Special Projects and Honorary Council Member of Badan Warisan Malaysia. She is a passionate heritage professional. The holder of an MA in Social History and an MA in World Heritage Studies, she is committed to putting her expertise to use in the promotion of heritage preservation. Since arriving in Malaysia in August 2023, Katy has been working with Badan Warisan Malaysia as a volunteer and as an Honorary Council Member and is managing numerous projects that contribute to the mission of this heritage NGO under the title Head of Special Projects. She is the project lead for an ongoing collaborative initiative exploring Malaysia\u2019s culinary heritage; she led the project to revitalise the heritage garden of Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman (a traditional Malay house under the care of BWM), and is currently project managing the restoration of Rumah Penghulu. This builds upon previous experience gained working for the Bostonian Society in the USA, during which time she developed education and interpretation projects to enhance visitor experience at the Old State House museum in Boston.
