Iu-Mien in Muang Nan Politics: a Contribution from Siamese Sources
Iu-Mien or Yao is an ethnic minority inhabited in mountainous regions of Northern Thailand alongside other highlanders. Thai receptions towards these highlanders are of an isolated community, independent from lowland müang, etc. Dr Suchon’s presentation, an outcome of his own research, will propose a different perspective. The initiation of his research follows the groundbreaking study of Hjorleifur Jonsson’s Iu-Mien ethnohistory. His research pursues further by using official sources from the National Archive of Thailand to contextualize the political sphere of Iu-Mien among Tai-Lao müangs network and Siamese court.
