Exploring the Textile Traditions of Alor Regency, Indonesia

Little is known about the handwoven textiles of Alor Regency, Indonesia. However, the diverse population of Alor Regency, located north of the most easterly island of East Indonesia or Timor, produce distinct textiles that serve as cultural identity markers, gifts of exchange during rituals, and items traded between the non-weaving peoples of the interior and the textile-producing groups living along the coasts of the regency’s main islands. Women weave cotton on backstrap looms to produce clothing, ritual items, and gift of exchange.

This talk is based on the e-book by Linda S. McIntosh and Yulianti Peni entitled Textiles of Alor, published in 2020

About the speaker

Dr Linda S. McIntosh is a curator of Mainland Southeast Asian textiles with a focus on weavings produced in Laos and Thailand. A Lao American, she learned how to weave from her mother at a young age, paving the way to formally study textiles in graduate school. She completed a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, USA, and a PhD from Simon Fraser University, Canada. Field research, which began in 1996, has led her to collect data not only in Thailand and Laos but also in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Burma. Based in Bangkok, Thailand, some of her works include curating two exhibitions and writing their respective catalogs: “Status, Myth and the Supernatural: Ritual Tai Textiles” and “Weaving Paradise: Southeast Asian Textiles and Their Creators”. Linda also wrote Art of Southeast Asian Textiles: The Tilleke & Gibbins Collection and Thread and Fire: Textiles and Jewellery from the Isles of Indonesia and Timor.
