The Kuang Luang Wiang Kaew Project was initiated by Chiang Mai Provincial Office, with an aim to transform the area around a former women’s prison for public use. Back in 2014, the Provincial Office held a project contest to determine how the area should be used. Among the participants, the winning team came up with the concept, ‘Revealing the Land to the Wiang Kaew City.’ It was a concept to build a historic public park that can be utilised by everyone, while preserving and showcasing its historical value. The excavation result from the Fine Arts Department indicates that the area used to be a part of the Lanna King’s Palace before becoming a prison.
As this project involves both development and preservation, many questions arose as to what is worth preserving. There were many different ideas and debates along the way, which led to an ongoing effort by various stakeholders to develop the proper solution based on various approaches to the project, while retaining its significant historical values. This seminar aims to set an open stage for the sharing of experience, knowledge, and way of working in bringing the project out to the general public, to exhibit the latest project design, and to discuss and exchange the ways forward.
The panel discussion will be conducted in Thai.
