In correlation with The Siam Society 120th Anniversary special performance, “1907: Rama V’s European Operatic Journey”, an operatic variety show adaptation of King Chulalongkorn’s visit to Europe in 1907, the latest edition of The Siam Society Literary Lounge titled “In Search for Cio Cio San: King Rama V’s Opera Visits of 1907” is scheduled to be held on Saturday, 5 October 2024 at 14:00 – 16:00. 

The Siam Society cultural officer, Dr Peerapat Ouysook, and stage director, Tarin Prinyaknit will lead a discussion of King Chulalongkorn’s travel memoir to Europe in 1907, known in Thai as “พระราชนิพนธ์ไกลบ้าน” (Far From Home).

Join them as they uncover details concerning King Chulalongkorn’s visits to the opera houses in Italy, France, and The UK, where he attended lavish operatic performances led by the famous artists of the Belle Epoque, including Mme Marguerite Carré, Mme Marthe Chenal, and Mme Eugenia Burzio.

Participants can expect to see the costume and set designs of the operas attended by King Chulalongkorn, as well as the vocal recordings of some singers he heard and saw. All of which are now accessible via public archives in Europe.
