LECTURE SERIES CONTEMPORARY DESIGN IN THAILAND: Contemporary Ceramics in Thailand
This lecture is a short summary of the research titled “Survey of Contemporary Ceramic in Thailand From 1985 to 2016” by Pim Sudhikam. The survey started in 1985 which was the first year of the National Ceramic Exhibition. Research procedures are documentary studies of exhibition catalogs, competition catalogs, and reviews of exhibitions including interviews and collecting images of artworks from the artists. The findings have shown us a broad view of contemporary ceramic practice in Thailand and can be used as a reference to contemporary ceramic studies in the future. In addition to the survey, the lecture will cover other visual artists who have recently used clay as their medium and has helped expand the contemporary ceramic scene in Thailand.
About the speaker
Pim Sudhikam holds a Bachelor of Industrial Design from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, and a Master of Fine Arts from HDK Gothenburg University, Sweden. Since 1998 Pim has been working with clay as her main medium, investigating pottery as material, process and content. Her works include collections of objects, sculptures, and large-scale, site-specific installations. The works explore a balance between what happened and what is being made while she tries to bring natural phenomena into the domestic context in the form of vessels. Pim has taken part in exhibitions, symposia and residencies in Thailand and abroad. She has received “Awards of Excellence in Arts and Crafts” from the Ministry of Culture, “National Invention Award” from the National Research Council of Thailand and an Honourable Mention from the 39th Ceramic Competition Gualdo Tadino, Italy. Pim is a board member of the Thai Ceramic Society and Vice President of The International Academy of Ceramics (IAC). She is an Associate Professor at Chulalongkorn University.
