An Excursion to Lopburi Province
Lopburi province lies in the eastern part of the Central Region. The distance from Bangkok is 154 kilometres. The extreme west of the province consists of low-lying plains with the Lopburi River coursing through. The northern and eastern are mainly hilly lands. The town of Lopburi lies on the left bank of the Lopburi River which is a small river joining the Pasak River at Ayutthaya. Modern Lopburi can be perceived as unappealing or as mundane as other provincial Thai towns but it has played an important part in Thai history for over 1,000 years, evident in its large number of ancient monuments.
The ancient city was already a crucial location when the Khmer Empire expanded its power across this region. It became the second capital of the Kingdom when the rulers resided in Ayutthaya and its greatest days were during the reign of King Narai, between 1657 – 1688. Chevalier de Chaumont, the ambassador of Louis XIV, presented his King’s letter to King Narai at Louvo, Lopburi’s former name. One can get a sense of what Lopburi must have been like during that period from several details about the town, recorded from this mission. King Narai and his Greek adviser, Constantine Phaulkon (Chao Phaya Wichayen), often stayed in Lopburi. There are many fine and important religious buildings, which are now in ruins. Even though the modern town of Lopburi has undergone many urbanisations, its historical significance has endured.
Under the leadership of Professor Emeritus Dr Momrajawongse Suriyavudh Sukhasvasti, The Siam Society welcomes you to join us on this one-day study trip on 5 April 2025, to explore the historical sights and ruins of Lopburi and learn more about the glorious history of this ancient city.
