ห้องสมุดสยามสมาคมฯ มีกำหนดจัดกิจกรรม The Siam Society Literary Lounge เรื่อง “มูลโคและดินนวล การหล่อพระแบบดั้งเดิมในโลกสมัยใหม่” ในที่ 21 กุมภาพันธ์ 2569 เวลา 13.30 – 16.00 น.

การหล่อพระเป็นภูมิปัญญาโบราณที่มีกรรมวิธีซับซ้อน ละเอียดอ่อน และกินเวลานาน แต่ละขั้นตอนการผลิตตั้งแต่ต้นจนจบ ล้วนมีอิทธิพลต่อความงดงามขององค์พระ ดังนั้นช่างผู้เชี่ยวชาญที่เกี่ยวข้องทุกคนจึงต้องอาศัยความรู้ความเข้าใจเชิงลึกในส่วนของตนเพื่อจัดการกับปัจจัยต่างๆ

แขกรับเชิญทั้งสามท่านจะมาร่วมแบ่งปันความรู้และประสบการณ์ในการหล่อพระแบบดั้งเดิม พร้อมพูดถึงองค์ประกอบต่างๆ ในการทำงานที่เปลี่ยนไปตามกาลเวลา และอิทธิพลของความเปลี่ยนแปลงนั้นต่อองค์ความรู้ในส่วนของกรรมวิธีและผลผลิตที่เกิดขึ้นในตอนท้าย

Dr Tristram Riley-Smith สำเร็จการศึกษาระดับปริญญาเอกด้านมานุษยวิทยาศิลปะ ต่อมาเป็นผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านความมั่นคงประจำกระทรวงกลาโหม สหราชอาณาจักร ภายหลังเกษียณอายุจึงกลับมาทำงานด้านมานุษยวิทยาอีกครั้ง โดยได้รับทุนวิจัยจาก British Museum ในโครงการ Endangered Materials Knowledge Programme (EMKP)

อ. สุรพันธ์ อติชาตินันท์ (อ.แดง พัฒนช่าง) เป็นทายาทรุ่นที่ 5 ผู้สืบทอดวิชาช่างหล่อหลวงจากต้นตระกูล พระวรวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าประดิษฐวรการ เป็นผู้รักษาองค์ความรู้การสร้างพระพุทธรูปศิลปะรัตนโกสินทร์ และเป็นผู้ปั้นหล่อพระพุทธบาทจำลองทองคำ เฉลิมพระเกียรติสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ พระบรมราชชนนีพันปีหลวง ในวโรกาสเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษาครบ 5 รอบ ประดิษฐานในหอพระมณเฑียรธรรม วัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม โดยมีสยามสมาคมฯ เป็นเจ้าภาพ

รศ. นพ. ถนอม บรรณประเสริฐ เป็นหัวหน้าหน่วยศัลยศาสตร์ตกแต่งและเสริมสร้างใบหน้า ภาควิชาโสต ศอ นาสิกวิทยา คณะแพทยศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย สนใจความงามของใบหน้ามนุษย์ โดยฝากตัวเป็นศิษย์ของอ. ปัญญา เพชรชู (เพาะช่าง) และต่อยอดความสนใจในงานช่างหล่อหลวง ด้วยการศึกษาภูมิปัญญาช่างหลวงที่สืบสายจากพระองค์เจ้าประดิษฐวรการ ผ่านโรงหล่อพัฒนช่างที่สืบทอดโดยอ. สุรพันธ์ อติชาตินันท์

การศึกษาสัญจรที่กำลังจะเกิดขึ้น Siam Society Literary Lounge programme, titled “Cow Dung and Fine Clay: Traditional Buddha Casting in the Modern World,” to be held on 21 February 2026, from 13:30–16:00.

Buddha casting is an ancient body of knowledge involving a complex and highly refined process that requires considerable time. Each process influences the beauty of the finished image. Therefore, every skilled artisan involved must rely on knowledge and expertise in their respective field in order to manage the various factors involved.

Our three distinguished speakers will share their knowledge and experience of traditional Buddha casting, discussing the various components of the craft that have evolved over time, as well as the impact of these changes on both the techniques employed and the final works produced.

 Dr Tristram Riley-Smith holds a PhD in the Anthropology of Art. He later served as a security specialist at the UK Ministry of Defence. Following his retirement, he returned to anthropology and was awarded a research grant from the British Museum under the Endangered Materials Knowledge Programme (EMKP).

 Ajarn Suraphan Atichartanan (Daeng Phatthana-Chang) is a fifth-generation heir to the Royal Foundry tradition, inherited from his ancestor, His Royal Highness Prince Pradit Worakan. He is a custodian of the knowledge and tradition of Rattanakosin-style Buddha image creation and the sculptor and caster of the golden replica of the Buddha’s Footprint in commemoration of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother’s 60th Birthday Cycle Anniversary. The replica is enshrined in the Ho Phra Monthien Tham at Wat Phra Sri Rattanasatsadaram (the Temple of the Emerald Buddha), with The Siam Society serving as host.

 Assoc Prof Tanom Bunaprasert is Head of the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Otolaryngology, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University. With a keen interest in facial aesthetics, he studied under Ajarn Panya Phetchu (Poh-Chang Academy of Arts) and further pursued his interest in the Royal Foundry tradition by studying the royal craftsmanship lineage descending from Prince Pradit Worakan through the Phatthana-Chang Foundry, led by Ajarn Suraphan Atichartanan.

The programme will be moderated in Thai by Assoc Prof Pitchaya Soomjinda, and in English by Dr Peerapat Ouysook.

The event is reserved for only 30 participants.
