แผนที่โบราณของไทยสองชิ้น ณ หอสมุดรัฐสภา สหรัฐอเมริกา
แผนที่ ‘Double-sided manuscript map’ ที่หอสมุดรัฐสภาสหรัฐอเมริกา เป็นแผนที่โบราณภาษาไทยขนาดใหญ่ (250 x 114 ซม.) สองชิ้นบนสองด้านของแผ่นผ้าทอด้วยมือผืนเดียวกัน สันนิษฐานว่าทำขึ้นก่อนปี 1800 ซึ่งนับว่าเป็นแผนที่โบราณของไทยที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดชิ้นหนึ่งเท่าที่เคยพบมา อาจจะเก่ากว่าแผนที่ชุดที่พบในพระบรมมหาราชวังเมื่อปี 1996 (ดู Suntanee Pasuk and Philip Stott, Royal Siamese Maps, River Books, 2006) การบรรยายนี้จะให้ข้อมูลเบื้องต้นและข้อสังเกตบางประการเกี่ยวกับแผนที่สองชิ้นนี้ จากนั้นจะเชิญชวนผู้เข้าฟังช่วยกันสำรวจแผนที่ทั้งสองไปด้วยกัน [ขอเชิญชวนผู้สนใจคลิกดูแผนที่ทั้งสอง the Blue และ the Red ก่อนการบรรยาย]
The ‘Double sided manuscript map’ at the US Library of Congress are two huge maps (250 x 114 cm), drawn back-to-back on a piece of hand loomed cloth. Probably dated pre-1800, they are among the oldest Thai maps ever known, possibly pre-dated the famous “Royal Siamese Maps” (Suntanee Pasuk and Philip Stott, Royal Siamese Maps, River Books, 2006). The talk will provide information and initial observations about the maps and will invite the audience to explore the maps together. ธงชัย วินิจจะกูล เป็นศาสตราจารย์กิตติคุณ ภาควิชาประวัติศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยวิสคอนซิน-เมดิสัน และเป็นศาสตราจารย์รับเชิญ วิทยาลัยนานาชาติปรีดี พนมยงค์ มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ เป็นผู้แต่งหนังสือ Siam Mapped: A History of the Geo-Body of a Nation (1994) ซึ่งได้รับรางวัล Harry J Benda ของ Association for Asian Studies (สหรัฐอเมริกา) และหนังสือ Moments of Silence: The Unforgetting of the October 6, 1976, Massacre in Bangkok (2020) ซึ่งได้รับรางวัลหนังสือด้านมนุษยศาสตร์จาก European Association for Southeast Asian Studies และเป็นผู้ได้รับรางวัล Fukuoka Grand Prize ประจำปี 2023
Thongchai Winichakul is Emeritus Professor of History at University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Visiting Professor at Pridi Banomyong International College, Thammasat University. His first book, Siam Mapped: A History of the Geo-Body of a Nation (1994), was awarded the Henry J Benda Prize from the Association for Asian Studies (USA). His latest book, Moments of Silence: The Unforgetting of the October 6, 1976, Massacre in Bangkok (2020), was awarded the Humanities Book Prize from the European Association for Southeast Asian Studies. He is the 2023 laureate of the Fukuoka Grand Prize.
