Digging Deep: A Journey into Southeast Asia’s Past | A Talk by Charles Higham
In his new book Digging Deep: A Journey into Southeast Asia’s Past, Charles Higham describes how his archaeological discoveries happened. He will bring to The Siam Society, a ride through some very exciting times. What happened at the Ban Chiang excavations now nearly 50 years ago? What is it like to uncover the 3700 years old burial of a woman who wore over 120,000 shell beads? At Ban Non Wat, he found incredible Bronze Age super burials that require a complete rethink of social life as the first bronzes appeared. And now he has a new and exciting theory on the origins of early Thai civilizations in the light of climate change. As Professor Norman Hammond has written of this new book, “Here is a life laden with the thrill of discovery that have transformed understanding of the human past”.
About the speaker
Emeritus Professor Charles Higham studied archaeology at Cambridge University before taking up a lectureship at the University of Otago, New Zealand, in 1967. He began his fieldwork in Thailand two years later, in Roi et and Khon Kaen, and has been actively involved in investigating the past in Southeast Asia ever since. He has excavated at Ban Chiang, and directed fieldwork at Ban Na Di, Khok Phanom Di, and at many sites in Nakhon Ratchasima. His many publications have led to his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand, the British Academy and an Honorary Fellowship of St Catharine’s College, Cambridge. Four years ago, he became on Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to archaeology.
