Bangkok Transformed by Porphant Ouyyanont: A Book Launch and Celebration
How did Bangkok, once a modest riverside town, transform into the vibrant capital of a modern nation and an economic hub of mainland Southeast Asia? This book explores the dynamic forces that reshaped Bangkok between the late 18th and mid-20th century. Porphant Ouyyanont’s vibrant account shows how the booming rice economy, Chinese immigration, and royal enterprise drove Bangkok’s initial transformation. Despite subsequent waves of industrialisation and globalisation, the legacies of this first transformation continue to shape Bangkok’s unique character.
Porphant Ouyyanont was Thailand’s leading economic historian. His Thai books won the national research prize two years in a row. He was invited as a visiting professor at universities in Japan, Singapore, the United States and the Netherlands. He was preparing this book for National University of Singapore Press when he passed away too soon. Chris Baker brought the book to completion.
At this event, Imlee Ouyyanont will talk about her father, and Chris Baker will introduce the book. Copies will be on sale at a special price.
A small reception will be held from 18:30. Admission is free for both members and non-members.
