Prince Damrong’s Journey to Angkor a Century Ago
In 1924, the eminent Thai historian, Prince Damrong Rajanubhab, journeyed to Angkor Wat with his three daughters and the French historian, George Coedès. The trip was a fascinating exercise in pioneer tourism and delicate diplomacy. France had seized the Angkor region from Siam only 17 years earlier. Prince Damrong recorded everything in his journal, and his team took many photos. Three months after his return, he published Journey to Angkor which became an instant classic, and is now translated into English and published by River Books.
On the centenary of this historic trip, the editors, Peter Skilling and Chris Baker will introduce the book and show the photos taken in 1924. Copies of the book will be on sale at a special price.
About the speaker
Peter Skilling (Bhadra Rujirathat) is an eminent scholar of the Buddhism of Southeast Asia. He has a doctorate from L’École Pratique des Hautes Études, Paris, and has lived in Thailand for over fifty years. Chris Baker along with Pasuk Phongpaichit has written widely on Thailand’s history and political economy. Bruce Evans, the translator, was ordained as a monk in Thailand in the 1990s and has translated works by Thai Buddhist scholars.
