LECTURE SERIES AYUTTHAYA: ANCIENT CAPITAL, NEW PERSPECTIVES
The Coming of the Wat Mural in Late Ayutthaya | A Talk by Chris Baker and Pasuk Phongpaichit
About this lecture
When did murals appear in the ubosot and wihan of wat in late Ayutthaya? And why?
Murals were a brilliant and expensive addition to the fabric of the wat, requiring skills and patronage. Their appearance was a landmark in the history of cultural expression in Siam. What lay behind this event? What does the social history of the time suggest about the murals? And what do the murals tell us about the social history? This talk is illustrated with visuals from over a dozen sites.
