เมื่อเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ 2567 ที่ผ่านมา คณะสยามสมาคมฯ ได้เดินทางไปยังประเทศซาอุดีอาระเบีย และมีโอกาสได้แวะเที่ยวชมย่าน At-Turaif ที่เมือง Diriyah ซึ่งได้ขึ้นทะเบียนเป็นมรดกโลกในปี ค.ศ. 2010 คุณ Luke Potter ผู้ดำรงตำแหน่ง Turaif Site Senior Director และเจ้าหน้าที่จากโครงการ ยังมาเป็นผู้นำชม At-Turaif ให้คณะของเราด้วยตัวเอง พร้อมบอกเล่าเรื่องราวของเมืองโบราณจากศตวรรษที่ 15 แห่งนี้ ว่ากลายมาเป็นแหล่งรวมตัวและสถานที่พักผ่อนหย่อนใจของชาวซาอุดีอาระเบียในปัจจุบันได้อย่างไร

In February 2024, The Siam Society organised a study trip to visit the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and had a chance to visit At-Turaif, a historic district in Diriyah which was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010. We also had a special opportunity to have Mr Luke Potter, Turaif Site Senior Director, and other officers in the project guide us around the site while explaining how this ancient city built in the 15th century has become a gathering place and a place of recreation for Saudis today.

อาคารของเมือง At-Turaif สร้างมาจากอิฐโคลนและวัสดุธรรมชาติ ตัวเมืองประกอบไปด้วยลานกว้าง ตรอกซอกซอย และหอคอย ที่ขับเน้นสถาปัตยกรรมแบบ Najdi ออกมาได้อย่างเด่นชัด 

Adobe mud and other natural resources were used in the construction of the city of At-Turaif. The city features courtyards, alleyways and towers that highlight the distinctive architecture of Najdi.

This district is an oasis for the nation’s historic sites preserved in outdoor museums and is an embodiment of the rich history of Saudi Arabia.

Mr Potter’s work is a part of the Diriyah Gate Development Authority which was set up in 2018. It is the Saudi Arabian government’s giga project to transform a traditional-style settlement into a global gathering place that can give an experience rooted in Saudi culture and values while also showing how heritage and culture can benefit the country and the world.

การเปลี่ยนแปลงทางสังคมเช่นนี้ในซาอุดีอาระเบีย และการสนับสนุนให้ผู้คนเชื่อมโยงตัวเองเข้ากับอัตลักษณ์และประวัติศาสตร์ผ่านมรดกของตน เป็นเรื่องที่น่ามหัศจรรย์ยิ่ง เมือง At-Turaif จึงเป็นตัวอย่างอันยอดเยี่ยมของสถานที่ทางประวัติศาสตร์ ที่สามารถปรับตัวให้เข้ากับวิถีชีวิตของคนยุคใหม่

This social shift in Saudi Arabia and how people are now being encouraged to connect to their identity and history through their heritage is rather phenomenal. At-Turaif is definitely a great example of how historic sites can seamlessly integrate into modern people’s way of life lives.

Study trips are a core activity of The Siam Society, in line with its mission to promote knowledge of the culture, history, arts and natural sciences of Thailand as well as those of its neighbouring countries.
