The Old Bangkok III: A Visit to Four Heritage Buildings

When visiting Thailand for the first time, most visitors anticipate seeing temples and traditional homes with distinctive roofs. To one’s surprise, the nation and its capital are actually rich sources of European architecture. Western architecture began to flourish in Siam during the modernisation period more than a century ago while also representing a story of intercultural differences, more obscure class structures and changing habits of Siamese people. Bangkok’s Old Town is now home to a unique blend of historic buildings with European influences and traditional Thai structures. However, there is still more to the city’s urban landscape than imposing temples and remodelled colonial residences.

Following previous years’ two study trips to various European-styled heritage buildings in Bangkok from both King Rama V’s and King Rama VI’s reigns, The Siam Society, under the leadership of Dr Navamintr Vitayakul, Council Member and Chairperson of the Lecture Committee of The Siam Society, will present this rare opportunity of a one-day trip to visit some of the spectacular heritage buildings in Bangkok, including Himmapan House, King Prajadhipok Museum, Suriyanuvat House, and Abdulrahim House.

Noon: Lunch at a local restaurant.
Afternoon: Visit Suriyanuvat House, a two-storey building that formerly belonged to Minister Phraya Suriyanuvat. His birth name was Kerd Bunnag and he was considered Thailand’s first economist with his contributions to the country’s finance.

Then visit Abdulrahim House, which originally belonged to Mr H. Abdulrahim, an Indian merchant who came to settle in Thailand during the reign of King Rama V.
