Pattani and Narathiwat Provinces: Explore the Cultural Legacy of Thailand’s Deep South

Pattani and Narathiwat occupy a unique position at the crossroads of the Thai, Malay, Islamic, Chinese, and wider maritime worlds. For centuries, these lands formed part of a vibrant network of trade and cultural exchange linking the kingdoms of mainland Southeast Asia with the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. Their ports welcomed merchants, scholars, pilgrims, and travellers from distant shores, leaving a remarkable legacy that continues to shape the region’s distinctive identity today.

Our journey begins at Yarang Ancient City, widely believed to be associated with the ancient kingdom of Langkasuka, one of the earliest and most influential centres of civilisation in the Malay Peninsula. From these archaeological remains, we trace the region’s evolution through the rise of the Patani Sultanate, whose legacy is reflected in magnificent mosques, historic palaces, traditional Malay architecture, and enduring artistic traditions.

Throughout the programme, participants will encounter a remarkable cultural landscape where Buddhist temples adorned with historic murals stand alongside centuries-old mosques, while elegant aristocratic residences, traditional Kolek boats, and vibrant artistic communities reveal the diverse influences that have shaped the region over many generations. Visits to museums, heritage houses, and centres of local craftsmanship will offer further insights into the intellectual, artistic, and spiritual traditions that continue to flourish in southern Thailand.

The journey concludes in Narathiwat, where ancient Quran manuscripts, historic religious monuments, and multicultural communities provide a compelling testament to the region’s role as a meeting place of peoples, faiths, and ideas.

The Siam Society, under the leadership of Dr Navamintr Vitayakul, is delighted to invite members and friends to join this rare opportunity to gain a deeper appreciation of the history, heritage, and cultural richness of Thailand’s Deep South, Pattani and Narathiwat Provinces.

Believed by many scholars to have been a centre of the ancient Kingdom of Langkasuka, Yarang preserves the remains of a sophisticated urban settlement dating back more than a millennium.
