Exploring Turkey’s Black Sea and Southeastern Regions

Join The Siam Society’s study trip to Turkey’s Black Sea and Southeastern regions from 12 – 23 May 2025, an unforgettable journey through breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and ancient history.

Explore the Black Sea region, renowned for its lush northern coast, misty forests, and picturesque villages, where fertile lands support thriving tea plantations and hazelnut farms. Highlights include Trabzon, a city shaped by Byzantine and Ottoman influences, the iconic Sumela Monastery perched dramatically on a cliff, and the serene Uzungöl, an alpine lake nestled among verdant mountains.

Continue south to Southeastern Turkey, a region steeped in history and culture. Discover Gaziantep’s world-famous pistachio baklava, savory kebabs, and the remarkable Zeugma Mosaic Museum. Visit Mount Nemrut, where colossal stone statues overlook stunning mountain landscapes, and explore Şanlıurfa, the “City of Prophets,” home to Göbekli Tepe, the world’s oldest known temple complex. In Mardin, admire its golden-stone architecture, panoramic views of the Mesopotamian plains, and iconic landmarks like the Deyrulzafaran Monastery and the Great Mosque.

This carefully curated expedition offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical treasures, and culinary delights, promising an extraordinary adventure through Turkey’s most captivating regions.

Day 1: Monday, 12 May: Bangkok
20:00 Meet at Suvarnabhumi Airport and check in at the Turkish Airlines check-in counter.
22:45 Depart Bangkok for Istanbul by Turkish Airlines flight TK65
   
Day 2: Tuesday, 13 May: Istanbul – Trabzon
05:15 Arrive at Istanbul International Airport, pass immigration control and transfer for flight to Trabzon.
08:05 Depart Istanbul for Trabzon by Turkish Airlines flight TK2820
09:55 Arrive at Trabzon Airport, Trabzon, which is the second largest city in the Black Sea region, founded by Greek traders from Miletus in the 8th century BC. Its rich history includes influences from Cimmerians, Medes, Hellenes, and Byzantines. Once a vital stop on the Silk Road, it remains the Black Sea’s busiest port.
Drive to the historic town centre. Explore Trabzon’s notable landmarks. Visit the Atatürk Mansion, a beautiful example of early 20th-century European architecture surrounded by lush gardens. Once home to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, it now serves as a museum displaying period furniture, art, and personal artefacts.
Noon: Lunch at a local restaurant
Afternoon: Visit Aya Sofya Mosque (Hagia Sophia), a former Byzantine church dating back to the 13th century. Renowned for its impressive frescoes and unique architecture.
Evening: Dinner and overnight at Radisson Blu Hotel, Trabzon
   
Day 3: Wednesday, 14 May: Trabzon
Breakfast at the hotel
Morning: Proceed through the high plateaus of Trabzon and make a brief stop at Maçka to catch local minibuses that will take you up to the Sumela Monastery. Nestled on a steep cliff 1,150 metres above sea level, the monastery was founded in the 4th century AD, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The monastery complex includes a church, chapels, and living quarters, all built into the rock face. Its stunning frescoes, depicting scenes from the Bible, are a testament to Byzantine artistry. The location offers breathtaking views of the Altındere Valley, making the monastery not only a spiritual site but also an architectural marvel surrounded by natural beauty.
Noon: Lunch at a local restaurant
Afternoon: Proceed back to Trabzon, and visit Trabzon Castle. It offers panoramic views of the city and the Black Sea and is a great spot for photos. Free time at the Trabzon Bazaar to experience local culture and shop for souvenirs like traditional crafts, spices, and local produce.
Evening: Dinner and overnight at Radisson Blu Hotel, Trabzon
Day 4: Thursday, 15 May: Trabzon

Morning: Proceed to Uzungöl, a picturesque lake located about 100 km south of Trabzon, nestled in the foothills of the Zigana Mountains. The lake is surrounded by lush green forests and towering peaks, offering a stunning natural landscape. The area is well-known for its serenity and tranquillity, making it an ideal spot for nature lovers and photographers.
Noon: Lunch at a local restaurant
Afternoon: We will take a scenic walk around Uzungöl Lake that offers a chance to enjoy the views of the lake, and the surrounding mountains and for those who still have energy left, we will go hiking on the surrounding hills. This short trail leads up to viewpoints, where we can get a panoramic view of the lake, the village, and the majestic mountains. The trail may take 1-2 hours to complete and can be somewhat steep, but will reward us with breathtaking vistas.
After that, proceed back to Trabzon.

Day 5: Friday, 16 May: Trabzon – Gaziantep
Breakfast at the hotel
Morning: Check out of the hotel, and proceed to visit Trabzon Museum located in a building that was originally the Ziraat Bank, built in the early 20th century. The structure retains its historical architectural features.  It displays Trabzon’s rich history through various artefacts from different periods.
Noon: Lunch at own arrangement in downtown Trabzon
Transfer to the Gaziantep airport

Day 6: Saturday, 17 May: Gaziantep

Morning: Visit the Zeugma Mosaic Museum, the world’s largest mosaic museum. Most of the mosaics on display were unearthed at the Roman site of Belkıs-Zeugma and were carefully rescued before the Birecik Dam flooded much of the site. Dating from the Roman and Late Antique periods, these mosaics are among the finest examples of Roman art. The museum’s most famous piece is the Gypsy Girl, a small yet stunning piece renowned for its exceptional detail and lifelike portrayal, perfectly capturing the essence of ancient artistry.
After that strolling through the narrow streets of the old city.
Noon: Lunch at a local restaurant and experience the unique flavours of Gaziantep’s culinary culture.
Afternoon: Explore the vibrant Kapalı Çarşı (Covered Bazaar), where you can find jewellery, traditional clothing, henna shops, and much more.
Evening: Dinner and overnight at Novotel Hotel, Gaziantep

 

Day 7: Sunday, 18 May: Gaziantep – Adiyaman
Breakfast at the hotel
Morning: Check out of the hotel, and drive through Mesopotamia from Gaziantep to Halfeti and take our private boat and cruise to Rumkale to witness the Sunken Village of Halfeti as well as the evolution of humankind from rock-carved temples and castles on the hills to modern and gigantic dams to control the water. (Approximately 1 hour boat ride)

Continue to Adiyaman known for its rich history and landscapes and most famous for being the gateway to Mount Nemrut.
Evening: Dinner and overnight at Ramada by Wyndham, Adiyaman
   
Day 8: Monday, 19 May: Adiyaman – Şanlıurfa
Breakfast at the hotel
Morning: Check out of the hotel and drive to Mount Nemrut, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. The site is famous for its tomb sanctuary, built in the 2nd century BCE by Antiochos, the king of the Kingdom of Commagene. We will hike approximately 40 to 60 minutes to reach the 2,150-metre peak and admire the colossal limestone statues of gods and goddesses, including Zeus, Apollo, Tyche, and Antiochos himself. These statues, along with the massive burial mound and terraces, reflect a unique blend of Greek, Persian, and local Anatolian influences.
Noon: Lunch at a local restaurant
Afternoon: Proceed to Şanlıurfa and visit Balıklıgöl, also known as the Pool of Sacred Fish. According to Islamic tradition, this is the site where the Prophet Abraham was miraculously saved after being thrown into a fire by the order of King Nimrod. Legend says the flames turned into water, and the burning wood transformed into fish, which still inhabit the pool today and are considered sacred. Admire the tranquil atmosphere, the surrounding gardens, and the historic architecture, including the Halil-ur-Rahman Mosque and the Rizvaniye Mosque, which add to the site’s spiritual and cultural significance.

Day 9: Tuesday, 20 May: Şanlıurfa – Mardin

Check out of the hotel and proceed to visit Göbekli Tepe, a Neolithic site dating back to 9600 BCE, predating Stonehenge by 6,000 years. Known as the “World’s Oldest Temple,” Göbekli Tepe is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a marvel of ancient engineering, featuring massive stone pillars arranged in circular formations, carved with intricate animal motifs. We will then visit The Şanlıurfa Archaeology and Mosaic Museum to admire an impressive collection of artefacts, including ancient statues, tools, and beautiful mosaics that highlight Şanlıurfa’s rich cultural heritage.
Noon: Lunch at a Horse Racing area
Afternoon: Continue to Mardin, renowned for its stunning stone architecture and rich cultural heritage.
Evening: Dinner and overnight at Ramada Plaza by Wyndham, Mardin

 

Day 10: Wednesday, 21 May: Mardin
Breakfast at the hotel
Morning: Proceed to visit Kasımiye Medrese, a 15th-century theological school that served as a prominent centre for education during its time. The medrese is admired for its elegant design, serene courtyard, and historical significance. Followed by Deyrulzafaran Monastery, a significant site for the Syrian Orthodox Church. This monastery, built on the foundations of a pagan temple dedicated to the Sun, also houses the tombs of several Syrian Orthodox Patriarchs.
Noon: Lunch at a local restaurant
Afternoon: Drive out of Mardin for 30 min. to visit Dara Ancient City. Built in the 5th century as a Roman garrison city, Dara was designed to protect the eastern border of the Byzantine Empire. The city is home to well-preserved ruins, including ancient cisterns, rock-cut churches, and a Roman-era amphitheatre.
After returning to Mardin, stroll through the narrow, winding streets of the old town, known for its historic architecture and cultural heritage. We’ll have the chance to shop for local handicrafts, with a special focus on the famous silverwork of the region, renowned for its intricate designs.

Day 11: Thursday, 22 May: Mardin – Istanbul
Breakfast at the hotel
Morning: Check out of the hotel and transfer to Mardin Airport. A packed lunch will be provided.

A deposit of THB 50,000 and a photocopy of the identification page on your passport must accompany the booking. Your reservation will be confirmed as soon as the deposit has been made. Payment in full will be required 75 days before the start of the trip (i.e. by Wednesday, 26 February 2025). There is a 4% surcharge for credit/debit card payment to cover bank charges. Inclusions:

  • Domestic air ticket (Trabzon – Gaziantep)
  • The contribution includes accommodation (sharing basis), meals as mentioned in the programme, sightseeing cars, entrance fees, gratuities and other costs incurred to make this trip possible.
  • Basic travel insurance which will only cover participants travelling from and back to Thailand.

Exclusions:

  • International tickets as mentioned in the programme (Bangkok – Trabzon and Mardin – Bangkok)
  • Lunch on day 5 at Trabzon downtown
  • Visa fees (if any), personal expenses, personal food and beverage consumptions, etc.

Please note that the flight itinerary between Bangkok – Trabzon and Mardin – Bangkok as mentioned in the programme only serves as a suggestion. Trip participants can travel with their preferred airline of choice throughout the above sequence of the itinerary.

Tourist Visa Policy

Thai, US, Canadian, British, Swiss, all European Union member states, and Japanese passport holders have visa-free entry to Turkey for up to 15 days to 90 days of stay depending on your nationality.

Australian passport holders need an e-Visa to enter Turkey. You can apply for an eVisa via an online application, which is the most convenient option and can be completed from your home. The visa will cost around USD 66.

Cancellation charges:

75 days before the start of the trip (before 26 February): Deposit forfeited
74 – 31 days before the start of the trip (26 February to 11 April): 50% of the tour cost
Less than 30 days or cancellation without notice (12 April onwards): No refund

*The cancellation charges will also depend on the date we pay the deposit to our travel agent. If we have to pay the deposit to the travel agent before the 30-day period prior to the start of the trip, our officer will send an email to inform every participant before we make the payment as only a partial amount of the deposit can be refunded after that point.

Covid-19 policy

Due to a lower number of worldwide infections, many countries have relaxed their travel restrictions and quarantine requirements regarding Covid-19. The Siam Society would like to remind you of the following measures that we have put in place:

– In the event that trip participants are tested positive during the trip, the group will continue to follow the planned itinerary. To ensure the health and safety of all trip participants, those who tested positive shall adhere to appropriate self-isolation measures as directed by the trip leader.

Those tested positive with severe symptoms shall be treated in accordance with the health measures stipulated by the local government. Medical costs shall be at the expense of the trip participant(s).
